Audience Engagement and Persuasion in Court: A Multimodal Approach

prosloví

dr hab. Magdalena Szczyrbak, prof. UJ

Anotace:

The talk will focus on the interplay of various semiotic resources in the closing argument delivered by the defence in a highly publicised criminal case. Using video material from the trial of Derek Chauvin, the police officer convicted for the death of George Floyd, I will demonstrate how the combination of modes (speech, gaze, gesture, posture, image, video) enhances audience engagement and increases persuasiveness. Drawing on earlier research into multimodality, courtroom rhetoric and proximity in disciplinary genres, the analysis will look at the ways in which the defence counsel controls the rhetorical features of his multimodal performance and constructs himself and the audience as people with similar understandings and goals. The study will specifically reveal how the counsel constructs the proximity of commitment, the proximity of membership and the proximity of experience. In the analysis, I will explore such facets of proximity as organisation, argument structure, credibility, stance and engagement, as well as identify key rhetorical strategies aiming to persuade the audience.
